看笑話學英文

When my eight-year-old asked how I knew I was pregnant, I told her I had taken a pregnancy test.
“Oh,” she said. “What questions were on the test?”
When my eight-year-old asked (how I knew I was pregnant), I told her (I had taken a pregnancy test).
“Oh,” she said. “What questions were on the test?”

eight-year-old: 這其實是個形容詞，本來應是eight-year-old boy或eight-year-old son 之類的，但在口語中直接將後面名詞省略，由"I told her"和 "she said"就可以得知作者的小孩是小女生。另外，因為year這種單位詞已經變為形容詞的一部分，所以不用加s變成複數形式喔~舉例 "Is a 100-pound 0-year-old boy overweight?"(一個100磅的十歲小男生算過重嗎?)中的pound和year都是單數形式。

 這個笑話的梗就是在test，它有以下幾個意思:

1. (n.) 試驗，化驗，檢驗 (A test is a deliberate action or experiment to find out how well something works.)

EX. The test will show if this is a real gold. 這個試驗可以證明這是否是真金。

EX. I just had a blood test. My blood type is A. 我剛剛去驗血。我是A型。

2. (n.) 測驗，小考 (A test is a series of questions that you must answer or actions that you must perform in order to show how much you know about a subject or how well you are able to do something.)

EX. We had a math test  this morning. 今天早上我們有一個數學測驗。

EX. He did not pass the English test. 他沒通過英文小考。


3. (vt.) 試驗，化驗，檢驗 (When you test something, you try it, for example by touching it or using it for a short time, in order to find out what it is, what condition it is in, or how well it works.)

EX. The drug must first be tested  to see if it works on other cancers. 一定要先化驗這個藥，看它能否對其他癌症起作用。

EX. My doctor wants me to be tested for diabetes. 我的醫生希望我能夠做糖尿病檢驗。

4. (vt.) 測驗 (If you test someone, you ask them questions or tell them to perform certain actions in order to find out how much they know about a subject or how well they are able to do something.)

EX. The teacher is going to test us in history. 老師要給我們歷史測驗。

5. 常用組合~ stand the test of time 經得起時間的考驗 (If you say that something will stand the test of time, you mean that it is strong or effective enough to last for a very long time.)

EX. I'm sure that my product can stand the test of time. 我相信我的產品可以經得起時間的考驗。

當我八歲的小孩問我是怎麼知道自己懷孕了，我告訴她我有去做懷孕測驗(應該翻"驗孕"比較好啦~)。

「喔，」她說。「那測驗裡的問題是什麼?」
